As he pulled the lobster trap from a depth of about 40 fathoms off the Isle of Shoals, Gary Glidden thought he had just hauled up trash.“When it came up I thought it was white,” said the Rye, N.H., lobsterman. “I don’t know if it was just the angle we were looking at, with the sun shining, we thought it was a plastic bottle. Then, with the sunlight or something, it started turning blue.”
A brilliant pearly blue, speckled with indigo spots along its spine, and with a violet hue striped down its back and ringing each section of shell on the tail. A beauty of a rare blue American lobster was caught that day, Wednesday, Oct. 12, by the crew of the lobster boat, off the coast of New Hampshire. They typically catch between 6,000 to 7,000 lobsters a day, all bound for seafood markets. But not this one.
Mr. Glidden, a lobsterman of 28 years, planned to donate the blue lobster to an aquarium, as he’s done with the eight or so other blue lobsters, two orange, and an orange and red lobster he’s trapped in his days on the ocean. He and his wife are members of the New England Aquarium, where he’s given a few of his rare catch, so he reached out to them again.

A Fish Trap is ideal for trapping a single fish from an aquarium with extensive decoration, or when minimizing removal-stress is a primary concern. It can be very difficult to extract a particular fish from a reef system with live rock or an African cichlid system with rocky aqua-scaping, where dismantling the structure is not a reasonable option. The Fish Trap is baited with food and as soon as the desired fish enters the trap, simply release the door string to instantly trap it. The heavy glass door closes quickly to contain the fish. The fish can be extracted directly from the aquarium within the Fish Trap, as only half the water drains from the container, for a truly stress-free exit.
