NC scientist single-handedly saving magnificent ramshorn snail

HAMPSTEAD - Andy Wood looks at his snails and can't help thinking they're his own California condors or Bengal tigers.

Wood may be the only reason the magnificent ramshorn snail is not extinct.

The snail, which once called freshwater beaver ponds and millponds home, hasn't been seen in the wild since 2005.

But here, in a Pender County pine forest, Wood has grown his colony to nearly 1,000. He checks on them twice a day and once at night, sometimes indulging them with romaine lettuce or cucumber slices.

"If you look at who has been working for the last 20 to 30 years to save this snail from extinction, there's only one person, and it's Andy," said Bill Adams, the biologist who first introduced Wood to the snail Wood simply calls magnifica. "It's because of Andy that the critter is still around."

Wood is a fourth-generation biologist who came to North Carolina in 1982 to become an environmental educator and to be closer to the woman he would marry.

How to Remove a Snail Colony from a Fish Tank | welcome to ...

For many aquarists, snails are an unwanted addition to the fish tank, especially when their numbers get out of control because of their prolific breeding habits! However, it isn’t necessary to use harmful chemicals to eradicate them from the aquarium doing so can harm both fish and other invertebrates in the tank.

Most aquarists overfeed their fish, especially when they are new to the hobby – try cutting back on the amount of food you give your tank to get rid of the pest snails. If you’re feeding your fish more than a couple times per day, then you are overfeeding your fish – as a general rule, feed you fish less than you think you should; much less.. However, this does not apply to certain species and small fry who require frequent feedings.

Additionally, there are some species of fish that like to eat snails -. You can also find some types of fish that will help eat the snails - ramshorn snails are great for freshwater puffers !

If feeding your fish less isn’t an option, then you can try to bait the snails so that they are easier to remove from the tank. You can quickly see an impact on the number of pest snails in your aquarium by using the bait method. All you have to do is place a piece of green vegetable in the tank for them to congregate on boiled peas, lettuce, zucchini and spinach leaves work very well for this. Leave it in for a couple hours after you turn off the light for the night, and then remove the food once a sizable group of snails starts to eat.
