Wildlife watch: The humble little budgie

I thought this little bird was worth mentioning as since all the rain at the beginning of the year you can regularly see flocks of these little birds flying around the area.

They are normally very nomadic but have stayed around the area due to the favourable feeding conditions.

All the modern domestic budgie breeds come from the original green wild birds.

It would also have to be one of the most recognisable parakeets in the world with societies in many countries devoted to breeding and raising budgerigars.

Wild budgies are found throughout most of Australia and are notably smaller than the domestic variety, and as stated before, very nomadic, following the seasonal feeding grounds.

There are still plenty of wild grasses in seed around but as summer draws near and feed runs short the birds will move on.

They are very much a flock bird and most activities are done together.

Flying is very coordinated as anyone having watched them will understand.

Budgie Cere

A lot of budgie owners have no idea whether their budgie is a male or female. You can find out the sex of a budgie by looking at it's nose or " cere ". Males will have a blue coloured cere, the intensity of the colour varies, and changes according to the birds health or hormone levels - whether is its breeding season or not. Here is an example of two males, the upper one has a pink color which one will also see in all white or yellow males. The bottom picture is the typical male cere of a 4 year old budgie.
